Bring on the Derby Days in the South
Not gonna lie….Im not a bourbon drinker.
Sometimes brown party liquor makes me mean. However, part of true “Southern Hospitality” is making people feel welcome. Inviting them, and their dogs, into your house with the hell-bent intention of having an amazing time. That’s the thing about the South….anyone is welcome!!!
You might not be Southern. You may never go to the Kentucky Derby (I’ve never been), but do not let that stop you from trying this cocktail.
Ingredients: per drink
- Fresh Mint/ 7 mint leaves for muddling per drink, so yes, you need a ton of mint.
- Mint sprigs for garnish
- 1 shot/ 4 tablespoons Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey per drink.
- 1/2 shot/ 2 tablespoons Moonshine …. 103 proof corn liquor per drink.
- Pinch of granulated sugar
- 2 blackberries for muddling per drink
- 2 blackberries per drink for garnish.
- Club Soda, approximately 2 shots
- Crushed ice- You can put it in the blender, beat it with hammer, or just use old school ice from trays, but this drink is better with the added liquid of melted ice, and smaller ice melts faster.
How to:
Prep Time: 3-5 minutes
- If you have them, use metal cups and throw them in the freezer. Historically mint juleps were in silver cups but why not use copper mugs or pewter cups, if you have them.
Chill the cups for several hours if you’re gonna go the metal cup routine, otherwise a red solo cup works just fine. Yes, if you’re using a solo cup it has to be red!! This blog post is from Bulldog Country. - Take your cup throw 7 mint leaves in the bottom.
- Add 2 blackberries to the bottom of the cup.
Then throw in a good pinch of granulated sugar. Grab sugar using your thumb and w 2 fingers = good pinch!
- Now muddle! If you don’t have a muddler, who cares? Use the blunt handle end of an ice cream scoop, or anything with a blunt end. Mash down and twist. Repeat! Repeat! You really want to mash all the flavor out of the mint and the blackberry.
- Muddle the hell out of it to really bring those flavors up.
- Then add 1 shot of a Bulleit Bourbon.
- 1/2 shot unflavored moonshine.
- Fill with crushed ice
- Then top off with club soda
One Note: Mint julep cups are smaller than standard size solo cups. If you’re “topping off” a mint julep that was made in a solo cup be sure to taste test it, as you don’t want to flood your drink with too much club soda based off your bourbon blend.
Garnish with blackberries/sprig of mint and enjoy….. slowly…. this is a sipping cocktail. Take your time.
Enjoy time with your friends and family. This drink will definitely get the party going and we all know how important that is.
Nothing is more memorable than seeing the fool who showed up wearing a bow tie to a bbq lose his shit and decide to “the worm” across the backyard!!
