5 design details inspired by my visit to the Wormsloe plantation.
Welcome to the historical Wormsloe Plantation built in 1737, the oldest plantation in the state of Georgia!!!
Located 8 miles south of the Savannah GA coastline, this picturesque homestead is gated by a masonry stucco gate and a mile-long entryway lined with over 400 live oaks draped in Spanish moss. With original tabby ruins overlooking the salt marsh on the Isle of Hope and so many inspirational moments to take on as visitor this is the true flavor of the low country.
As a designer, I’m absolutely fascinated by local history this rich!!! Wormsloe Plantation is a colonial era archeological site that captures the true magic of the life along the coast in the old south.
Here are my top 5 design details inspired my Wormsloe Plantation visit to incorporate into your home.
From basic budget friendly additions items more elaborate and over-the top! Here is my guide to items selected to create character and build the essence of a home in the low country.
1. Brick accents.
Indoors or out, brick accents, such as flooring, are timeless features that weather beautifully over time adding casual elegance to any home.
Whether it’s on an entry porch or in a kitchen. Do not miss an opportunity to incorporate brick as an accent such as in a fireplace, or a feature such as a floor, or even an accent wall in a small office.
Brick gives that warm tailored essence reminiscent of an older era home.
2. Oyster Shells
Now hear me out. You may hate the taste of oysters and that’s fine. But in this region the oyster shell itself is an iconic symbol of living the good life on the coast.
At Wormsloe plantation a location abundant in oyster shells from riverbeds and surrounding marshes, the Oyster shells were used to make the Tabby walls that were poured into a frame for the plantation home. Once dried the tabby mixture was coated in plaster for durability. Adding this design element is an easy way to capture the essence of the low country.
Try oyster shell accent dishes for entertaining serving appetizers or go even larger and grander by adding a bocce ball court on the lawn. Bocce ball courts traditionally have an oyster shell blend surface for play. Embrace the oyster folks!! EM-BRACE IT!!
3. Bright green palmetto or palm fronds
Now it’s time to have some real fun.
Buy preserved palmetto fronds for floral arrangements.
Keep it simple; these dynamic shapes look incredibly understated and chic stacked in a simple glass vase.
Or go big by adding palmetto print wallpaper to brighten up your powder room create an accent wall with funky palmetto or palm frond wall paper.
Why not?…
Don’t live in the South? West Elm has amazing faux fronds HERE.
4. Wattle fencing
Set the tone for historical character and true romance by adding a wattle fence to your front door walkway or even around your herb garden.
A little goes a long way! You can buy wattle fencing pre-built panels online from suppliers such as Wayfair or Home Depot or build it yourself.
What?? If you decide to do it yourself definitely send me pics folks! I’m cheering you on the entire way!!
5. Hand forged iron hardware
As a designer nothing beats authenticity. Whether is on a small scale or you have the budget to get a bit more grand!
Take down those faux plastic shutters on the exterior of your home and replace them with cypress wood shutters and functional hand forged hinges and shutter dogs (tiebacks). The shutters shown in the photo are old growth pine but I recommend cypress or cedar for durability. My favorite source of authentic hardware is www.jwright.com.
If you’re looking to maximize your budget, only add the shutters to the front of your home to ramp up curb appeal.
If your home doesn’t have shutters, buy a hand forged garden gate handle or even a unique knocker for your front door.
There are many options for getting true authentic iron details added to your home.
